Netflix's 4Q restores company's investment luster

(AP) ? Netflix has re-emerged as a stock-market star after a fourth-quarter performance that demonstrated its success in broadening the appeal of its Internet video service despite stiffer competition.

The results announced Wednesday served as a resounding endorsement of Netflix Inc. CEO Reed Hastings, who has been spending heavily to license more compelling movies and TV shows in hopes of warding off intensifying competitive threats. Companies such as Amazon.com Inc. and Coinstar Inc.'s Redbox have expanded into streaming video to Internet-connected devices to compete with Netflix.

Hastings' strategy has been met with widespread skepticism, but it paid off during the final three months of last year.

Netflix gained 2 million video-streaming subscribers in the U.S. during the quarter, propelling the company to a profit during a period that was supposed to produce a loss. In a letter to investors, Hastings credited the gains to people's interest in watching a wide range of entertainment on the tablet computers and Internet-connected TVs that they got as holiday gifts.

"As the sales of tablets go, apparently so go the fortunes of Netflix," Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

Investors were euphoric. Netflix's volatile stock soared $36.24, or more than 35 percent, to $139.50 in extended trading after the numbers came out. If the rally carries over into Thursday's regular trading, Netflix's stock would hit a new 52-week high. It would also mark a nearly 80 percent increase since the company's early December announcement of a licensing deal with The Walt Disney Co. for exclusive streaming rights to new movies beginning in 2016.

The upturn in Netflix's stock has been a boon for billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who began accumulating a 10 percent stake in the company in early September when the stock was trading below $55.

Despite the recent rebound, Netflix's stock remains well below its peak price of nearly $305 reached in July 2011. That was around the same time the company outraged subscribers with a change that increased prices by as much as 60 percent for those who wanted to stream video and still rent DVDs through the mail. Hastings has been scrambling to make amends since the backlash triggered mass cancellations.

"There is still an echo and a bruise," Hastings told analyst during a Wednesday conference call. "We are still extremely thoughtful and careful about what we are trying to do. It wouldn't take much for the issue to flare up again or for us to lose trust. You might say we are on probation at this point, so we are out of jail."

The fourth-quarter surge in new customers left Netflix with 27.1 million U.S. subscribers to its streaming service, which costs $8 per month. Hastings said he believes the U.S. streaming service eventually will have 60 million to 90 million subscribers, although he hasn't set a timetable for reaching that goal.

"We have a long way to go, but we are very happy with the quarter," Hastings said in a Wednesday interview.

Netflix's international expansion also picked up steam as the company ended the quarter with an additional 1.8 million subscribers outside the U.S.

That gave Netflix 33.3 million video-streaming subscribers worldwide as Netflix began the new year, up by nearly 10 million from the start of 2012.

Netflix also still has 8.2 million customers signed up for the DVD-by-mail rental plans that launched the company's early success. Although Netflix is phasing out the disc service, the company hung on to more of the DVD subscribers than it anticipated during the fourth quarter. Netflix lost 382,000 DVD subscribers during the quarter.

Netflix seems confident it will build upon its recent momentum in the current quarter, which will be highlighted by the Feb. 1 debut of a much-anticipated TV series called "House of Cards." The series is produced exclusively for the video streaming service and stars Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey.

In his letter, Hastings described "House of Cards" ''as a defining moment in the development of Internet TV." Netflix is releasing all 13 episodes of the first season simultaneously on the hunch that the added convenience will foster more subscriber loyalty instead of encouraging people to sign up for the service for just a month or two to watch exclusive series such as "House of Cards."

The company, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., forecast that its video streaming service will pick up 1.35 million to 2.1 million in the U.S. during the first three months of this year.

Netflix also expects to break even or generate another profit during the quarter. Analysts previously thought the company would lose money to start the year as expenses for the international expansion and video-licensing fees outpace revenue growth.

Although he applauded Netflix's fourth-quarter performance, Pachter still believes Netflix's rising bills to license video will hobble the company.

"I think the company is genuinely mistaken in how it thinks it is going to manage content costs," Pachter said. "This is truly a house of cards and it's going to come crashing down this year."

As of Dec. 31, Netflix owed $5.6 billion in licensing fees during the next five years, up from $5 billion through Sept. 30. In an indication that he believes Netflix can shoulder the financial load, Hastings told analysts Wednesday that he is interested in licensing Sony Corp.'s' latest movies in a deal similar to the one recently struck with Disney. Sony currently has a licensing agreement with the Starz pay-TV channel that ends in 2015.

Netflix earned nearly $8 million, or 13 cents per share, in the fourth quarter. That was a 78 percent plunge from net income of $35.2 million, or 64 cents per share, at the same time last year.

Taking their cue from Netflix's own projections in October, analysts polled by FactSet had predicted the company's would lose 12 cents per share, also because of expenses for expansion and licensing.

Revenue climbed 8 percent from the previous year to $945 million, about $10 million above expectations.

For the full year, earned $17 million, or 29 cents per share, on revenue of $3.6 billion. Netflix had started the year warning it might sustain an annual loss for the first time in a decade. The company earned $226 million, or $4.16 per share, on revenue of $3.2 billion in 2011.

ANA cancels 141 more flights with 787 jet grounded

TOKYO (Reuters) - All Nippon Airways will cancel 123 domestic and 18 international flights between Wednesday and Sunday after Boeing Co's 787 Dreamliner passenger plane was grounded, the Japanese airline said Monday.

More than 18,000 passengers will be affected.

The cancellations announced on Monday add to the 72 flights scheduled from January 19 to January 22 that ANA called off last week.

ANA, which flies the most Dreamliners of any airline, also said in the statement it will announce flight cancellations for January 28 later in the day and plans to announce cancellations occurring for dates from January 29 on Thursday.

On Sunday, U.S. safety investigators ruled out excess voltage as the cause of a battery fire last month on a 787 jet operated by Japan Airlines Co (JAL) and said they were expanding the probe to look at the battery's charger and the jet's auxiliary power unit.

Movie review: Jack Reacher | Bundaberg NewsMail

Topics:? movie review, tom cruise

Tom Cruise in a scene from the movie Jack Reacher.
Tom Cruise in a scene from the movie Jack Reacher. Karen Ballard - Image.net

TOM Cruise was an unusual choice to play the title character of Jack Reacher.

Firstly, he looks nothing like Reacher as he is described in Lee Child's bestselling crime novel series.

No amount of camera trickery could make Cruise look like the imposing beast of a man held in the minds of readers: 6' 5'' tall, weighing 100kg, muscular and having ice-blue eyes and sandy blonde hair.

Secondly, former military police investigator Reacher is the strong, silent type who rarely appears to feel pressure, even in stressful situations.

As director Christopher McQuarrie has pointed out, it's not a character Cruise is known for playing.

But somehow, Cruise has managed to pull it off, silencing the critics and fans of the novels who loudly questioned his casting.

What he lacks in height or physical bulk, Cruise makes up for with a searing intensity.

His fight scenes are believable - he looks like a military man and certainly knows how to shoot a gun.

The film follows an investigation into a seemingly random shooting of five people in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

All the evidence points to disgraced former military sniper James Barr.

But the accused says nothing, only scrawling three words on a pad of paper: Get Jack Reacher.

By the time Reacher shows up, Barr is in a coma and it's up to Reacher and defense lawyer Helen (Rosamund Pike) to determine if it's an open-and-shut case or if the mound of evidence left at the crime scene is too good to be true.

The movie is based on Childs' ninth Reacher book One Shot and I think the thrilling plot is a great first introduction to the series for movie goers.

The film genuinely keeps you on the edge of your seat and there's an air of conspiracy as Helen and Reacher dig deeper and deeper into the case.

Aussie actor Jai Courtney is also fantastic as one of the baddies.

Expect to see big things from him later this year when he stars opposite Bruce Willis in A Good Day to Die Hard.

I can't wait to see which book McQuarrie and Cruise choose to make into a sequel.

If this first film is anything to go by, Jack Reacher could turn into another great film franchise like Bourne.

Epigenetics explains rheumatism? Genes and their regulatory 'tags' conspire to promote rheumatoid arthritis

Jan. 20, 2013 ? In one of the first genome-wide studies to hunt for both genes and their regulatory "tags" in patients suffering from a common disease, researchers have found a clear role for the tags in mediating genetic risk for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an immune disorder that afflicts an estimated 1.5 million American adults. By teasing apart the tagging events that result from RA from those that help cause it, the scientists say they were able to spot tagged DNA sequences that may be important for the development of RA. And they suspect their experimental method can be applied to predict similar risk factors for other common, noninfectious diseases, like type II diabetes and heart ailments.

In a report published in Nature Biotechnology Jan. 20, the researchers at Johns Hopkins and the Karolinska Institutet say their study bridges the gap between whole-genome genetic sequencing and diseases that have no single or direct genetic cause. Most genetic changes associated with disease do not occur in protein-coding regions of DNA, but in their regulatory regions, explains Andrew Feinberg, M.D., M.P.H., a Gilman scholar, professor of molecular medicine and director of the Center for Epigenetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences. "Our study analyzed both and shows how genetics and epigenetics can work together to cause disease," he says.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating disease that causes inflammation, stiffness, pain and disfigurement in joints, especially the small joints of the hands and feet. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, an assault led primarily by white blood cells. According to Feinberg, several DNA mutations are known to confer risk for RA, but there seem to be additional factors that suppress or enhance that risk. One probable factor involves chemical "tags" that attach to DNA sequences, part of a so-called epigenetic system that helps regulate when and how DNA sequences are "read," how they're used to create proteins and how they affect the onset or progress of disease.

To complicate matters, Feinberg notes, the attachment of the tags to particular DNA sequences can itself be regulated by genes. "The details of what causes a particular sequence to be tagged are unclear, but it seems that some tagging events depend on certain DNA sequences. In other words, those tagging events are under genetic control," he says. Other tagging events, however, seem to depend on cellular processes and environmental changes, some of which could be the result, rather than the cause, of disease.

To tease apart these two types of tagging events, the researchers catalogued DNA sequences and their tagging patterns in the white blood cells of more than 300 people with and without one form of RA.

The team then began filtering out the tags that did not appear to affect RA risk. For example, if tags were seen on the same DNA sequence in those with and without RA, it was assumed that the tags at those sites were irrelevant to the cause or development of the disease. Then, from among the RA-relevant tags, they narrowed in on tags whose placement seemed to be dependent on DNA sequence. Finally, they made sure that the DNA sequences identified were themselves more prevalent in patients with RA. In this way, they created a list of DNA sequences associated with altered DNA tagging patterns, both of which were associated with RA.

Ultimately, the team identified 10 DNA sites that were tagged differently in RA patients and whose tagging seemed to affect risk for RA. Nine of the 10 sites were within a region of the genome known to play an important role in autoimmune diseases, while the 10th was on a gene that had never before been associated with the disease. "Since RA is a disease in which the body's immune system turns on itself, current treatments often involve suppressing the entire immune system, which can have serious side effects," Feinberg says. "The results of this study may allow clinicians to instead directly target the culpable genes and/or their tags."

"Our method allows us to predict which tagging sites are most important in the development of a disease. In this study, we looked for tagging sites under genetic control, but similar tags can be triggered by environmental exposures, like smoking, so there are many applications for this type of work," says Yun Liu, Ph.D., a lead researcher on the project.

The study also may shed light on how evolution works, explains Feinberg. "It seems that natural selection might not simply be selecting for an individual's current fitness level but also for the adaptability of future generations given an unknown future. We think that certain genetic sequences may be biologically beneficial and conserved over time because they increase the amount of variation found in tagging patterns, giving individuals a greater chance of adapting to environmental changes."

Chinese web giant Tencent blames technical glitch for global censoring of chat app

China National News (ANI) Tuesday 15th January, 2013

Chinese web giant Tencent has denied claims that there is global censoring of its popular chat app WeChat, adding that a technical glitch had led to certain sensitive terms being blocked outside China.

Tech blogs, Tech in Asia and The Next Web, both reported receiving messages saying their chat entries contained "restricted words", reports the BBC.

But one analyst said it was unlikely that the issue was just a "passing glitch".

The Next Web tried to write the words "Falun Gong", a group banned in China, and Tech in Asia attempted to send "Southern Weekend", the name of a newspaper in the south of the country that is at the moment the subject of a controversy surrounding censorship.

The blogs said their entries were blocked.

The Chinese government is known to closely monitor internet traffic within China, and all web content that crosses the state's borders.

China's Great Firewall prevents a number of Western companies such as YouTube, Google, Twitter, Dropbox, Facebook and Foursquare from operating inside the country.

When approached by Tech in Asia, Tencent issued a statement, apologizing for any inconvenience it has caused to users and said that a small number of WeChat international users were not able to send certain messages due to a technical glitch.

Tom Rafferty of the Economist Intelligence Unit said the issue was unlikely to be just "a passing glitch", and said that such practices could pose technical and political challenges to Tencent because international users were accustomed to sharing information freely.

The latest incident, according to Rafferty is representative of the 'growing pains' that China's internet and social media companies are likely to experience as they expand globally.

According to Tencent, WeChat has close to 300 million users, which makes it one of the world's biggest messaging apps. (ANI)

92% Zero Dark Thirty

All Critics (173) | Top Critics (42) | Fresh (160) | Rotten (13)

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.

No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.

From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.

A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.

Not only is Zero Dark Thirty one of the year's best movies, it's an inspiring one to share with your daughters. That is, if they're old enough to deal with explicit torture scenes.

A well-acted, well-intentioned, disjointed mess.

A well-produced and well-acted procedural/thriller film that stays focused on the frustrating nuts and bolts CIA led search for the elusive Al Qaeda leader.

A gripping, almost necessary, piece of filmmaking.

The picture acknowledges the very real presence of torture on the post-9/11 landscape -- had the filmmakers ignored the subject, the movie would be little more than vile, jingoistic nonsense.

(Jessica) Chastain's powerful performance, for which she deserves a best actress Academy Award, drives the film. She has no private life, no friends. Her obsession drives her.

"We always get our man, eventually."

Bigelow has hamstrung herself by not committing to a viewpoint. This is a by the numbers, cold, emotionally inert, just the "facts" procedural drama that is just barely a step above an episode of Law & Order.

Bigelow has crafted a film which will keep audiences enrapt for ages to come.

In a strong field of Best Picture nominees, "Zero Dark Thirty" has a decent chance to emerge the winner.

Powerful and gripping, the movie is not only a fine document of the hunt for Public Enemy #1, but also a testament to the dedication of those in every corner of the military, government, and intelligence community who refused to give up the search.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is film making at it's best.

An important film for our nation's soul. It gives context to the manhunt, and it lets us experience it for catharsis and closure.

The film has recently been slammed, perhaps as backlash to its early critical raves, but on close examination, it's not a work to readily dismiss.

Though it surely takes some dramatic license, "Zero Dark Thirty" is a worthy document of that moment and the people who made it possible.

This isn't a bad movie, it's just too easy. This is a movie for people who want to eat their fish without having to gut it first.

Kathryn Bigelow turned 10 years of looking for bin Laden into a magnificently well-crafted film.

It is a searing and riveting film, but one that doesn't take the easy way out and give short shrift to the complex emotions at play.

Zero Dark Thirty is not a sequel to Boal's and Bigelow's earlier effort, yet it is very much an extension of The Hurt Locker's taut pacing and maddening high-wire tension.

I was pretty upset that Bigelow got snubbed by the Academy.... until I actually SAW the film. It felt like a really good TV movie, but Jessica Chastain's phony and forced performance drags it down.

Egypt ex-president Mubarak granted retrial

Mubarak, Egypt
Egypt?s former president Hosni Mubarak has been granted a retrial (Picture: Reuters)

Egypt?s former president?Hosni Mubarak will face a retrial over the life sentence he received for?failing to prevent the killing of hundreds of protesters during the uprising that ended his regime nearly two years ago.

Judge Ahmed Ali Abdel-Rahman said Mubarak?s security chief Habib el-Adly, who is also?serving a life sentence,?will be retried as well.

The decision follows appeals against their convictions.

Mubarak is under investigation on other charges, so will not walk free regardless of the outcome of the retrial.

A new Mubarak trial could be popular, since many Egyptians were angry he was convicted for failing to stop the killings, rather than ordering the crackdown.

Mubarak?s defence lawyers had argued that the former president did not know of the killings.

But Egyptian officials found that he watched the uprising against him unfold through a live TV feed at his palace.

That report has mixed implications for Mubarak?s successor, Islamist Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

It also implicates the military and security officials in the protesters? deaths. ?As a number of them are still in power, any attempt to?prosecute them could spark a backlash.

Abdel-Rahman also overturned not guilty verdicts against Mubarak, his two sons and an associate of the former president, Hussein Salem, on corruption charges. Salem was tried in absentia and remains at large.

And the judge ordered the retrial of six of El-Adly?s top aides who were acquitted in the same trial.

No date has been set for the start of the retrial of the 11.

In addition, a prosecutor placed a new detention order on Mubarak yesterday, over millions of Egyptian pounds worth of gifts he and other regime officials allegedly received from Egypt?s top newspaper, Al-Ahram, as a show of loyalty while he was in power.

The 84-year-old ex-president remains in a military hospital. He was reportedly close to death last year, but the current state of his health is unknown.

UPDATE 2-ArQule, Daiichi's colorectal cancer drug fails trial - drax29

Fri Jan 11, 2013 10:40am EST

* Drug failed to meet goal of improving survival without the
cancer growing

* Drug also failed to meet secondary goal of showing
improved patient response

* ArQule shares down 15 pct

(Adds analyst comments, background; updates share movement)

Jan 11 (Reuters) ? An experimental colorectal cancer drug
being developed by ArQule Inc and Japan?s Daiichi
Sankyo Co Ltd failed to improve patient survival
without the cancer worsening, in a mid-stage trial, sending
ArQule?s shares down 18 percent.

ArQule shares were down 15 percent at $2.48 on the Nasdaq on
Friday morning. They touched a low of $2.39 earlier in the
session.

The trial, which enrolled 122 patients with refractory or
relapsed colorectal cancer, also failed to meet the secondary
goal of showing improved response to the drug tivantinib.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Adnan Butt said the stock fall
was an ?overreaction,? as Wall Street?s financial models did not
include the drug?s use in colorectal cancer.

?We attribute the majority of ArQule?s value to the
second-line liver cancer indication at this stage,? Butt wrote
in a note.

The drug tivantinib, ArQule?s lead candidate, is also being
developed as a potential treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma
or liver cancer.

ArQule and Daiichi in October said they reached an agreement
with the U.S. regulator on the design of a late-stage trial of
tivantinib in liver cancer.

Friday?s trial failure is the latest in a series of
drug-related bad news for the company in the past few months. It
discontinued a lung cancer trial in October and its Asian
partner Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co halted another trial in
August due to safety issues.

Both the trials were related to tivantinib.

The string of trial failures have dragged the company?s
shares, which have lost nearly 53 percent of their value over
the past six months.

MID-STAGE TRIAL FAILS

For the latest mid-stage trial, patients were either given
the drug, tivantinib, twice daily, in combination with older
cancer drugs irinotecan and cetuximab, or placebo plus
irinotecan and cetuximab.

The drug improved patients? progression-free survival (PFS),
or survival without the cancer growing, but the improvement was
not statistically significant.

PFS was 8.3 months for patients treated with the drug,
compared with 7.3 months for those receiving a placebo.

ArQule tied up with Daiichi Sankyo in December 2008 to
co-develop tivantinib in the United States, Europe, South
America and other regions.

The companies plan to continue discussions with colorectal
cancer experts to determine how to proceed with further
development of the drug for this cancer, Daiichi said.

Kevin Durant and 7 Other NBA Players Who'd Star in an Office-Like Sitcom

As NBA stars become bigger and bigger celebrities, they begin to look for ways to improve their brand and increase their ability to produce revenue.

Usually this takes the form of shoe endorsements or various other commercials, but, as?Uncle Drew?and Blake Griffin?have shown, these stars' personalities can translate to the screen.

The next step above commercials is an actual TV show, and the perfect way to start an NBA sitcom is to spin-off an immensely popular show that's nearing its end.

The Office's ninth season will be its last, and what better way to go out than to introduce an all-NBA lineup on? one of America's favorite comedies.?
