U.S., Phil troops undergo Human Rights seminar

Thursday, June 28, 2012

UNITED States and Filipino troops underwent a one-day seminar on Human Rights-International Humanitarian Law (HR-IHL) in Zamboanga City, a military official said Thursday.

The seminar, which was sponsored by the Armed Forces? 4th Civil Relations Group (CRG), was held Wednesday at Camp Navarro that houses the headquarters of the Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom).

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

Fourth CRG chief Lieutenant Colonel Erwin Alea said personnel from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi (BASULTA) areas were among the seminar participants aside from the personnel from the U.S. Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P) and Task Force Zamboanga (TFZ).

The TFZ is Wesmincom?s maneuver force based in Zamboanga City.

Alea said Gabriel Anthony Daclan of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Zamboanga Peninsula discussed the Red Cross? advocacy, which is geared towards integrating IHL into national legislation.

The Red Cross advocacy is also aimed to promote knowledge of and respect for this body of law among local and national authorities, armed and security forces, university students, and civil society.

Red Cross? efforts brought about a tangible result in December 2009 with the Philippine Government?s signing of a law punishing serious violations of IHL, genocide and other crimes against humanity.

Meanwhile, Alea said it was emphasized during the lecture that the core messages of the law of armed conflict are straightforward: fight only combatants and destroy only military objectives; collect and care for the wounded, whether friend or foe; do not kill, torture or abuse prisoners of war; and, treat all civilians humanely.

Likewise, Red Cross runs its assistance and IHL programs in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross Society.

The organization also helps the National Society boost its capacity in disaster preparedness and restoring family links.

?Your Armed Forces sees to it that every soldier gives adherence to these laws so that no member of the military will face charges of human rights violations,? Alea said.

The seminar was also in line with the campaign plan of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Internal Peace and Security Plan ?Bayanihan? that gives primacy to the HR and IHL. (Bong Garcia)

Highways-student loan deal poised for votes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican leaders pushed a sweeping highways-student loans package salvaging millions of construction jobs and maintaining low interest rates on millions of new college loans toward a House vote Friday even as conservative groups mounted a last-minute and likely futile campaign against it.

Favorable action by the Senate on what would be the only big jobs measure Congress has enacted this year was assured. Leaders there held out hope they could to get it done Thursday night but ran into procedural hurdles. Lawmakers in both parties hoped to get an early start bragging about a rare accomplishment four months before the election.

The conservative Heritage Action for America and the anti-tax Club for Growth urged a 'no' vote on the bill in emails Thursday to lawmakers, warning that it will be counted as a key vote on their legislative scorecards.

"This massive bill spends too much money, will continue taxpayer bailouts for highway spending, and keeps subsidies that have contributed directly to skyrocketing tuition rates," Club for Growth spokesman Barney Keller said.

Despite the backlash from such core conservative groups, the bill's supporters expressed confidence. "We got a pretty good reception in conference this morning," Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania said after House Republicans met on the bill.

After three months of haggling, House and Senate negotiators reached agreement on the package Wednesday. It includes a two-year, $100 billion spending plan for highway and mass transit construction and repairs, $6 billion to prevent rates on new student loans after June 30 from doubling, and a five-year renewal of federal flood insurance subsidies.

The bill gives states more flexibility over how they spend federal highway aid, consolidates transportation programs and shortens environmental delays to get highway projects built faster. It also expands a loan guarantee program aimed at increasing private investment in infrastructure projects.

Democrats and Republicans each gave way on issues important to their political constituencies, but both sides also scored victories. Republicans sacrificed proposals to force a go-ahead with the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline in the Midwest and to prevent the Obama administration from regulating coal ash as a hazardous toxin. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections blamed for stalling some road projects and safety, biking and pedestrian programs.

House Republican leaders pitched the package to their members in a closed-door meeting Thursday morning that was interrupted by news of the Supreme Court's health care decision.

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said some conservatives have doubts about voting for the package after House negotiators dropped a House-passed provision requiring the government to approve the Canadian border-Gulf Coast Keystone pipeline. President Barack Obama has vowed to veto the bill if it included the pipeline measure.

But Cassidy said, "There's also concern among conservatives to have a decent infrastructure and some certainty for our (state transportation departments) back home and our contractors so they can build roads.... It is a mixed bag. I will just tell you that." He said he was still undecided on how he would vote.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the influential House Republican Study Committee, will vote against the package, his office said.

Florida Republican Rep. Steve Southerland, one of the deal's negotiators, said he expects the package to win passage, explaining that no one has argued a short-term extension is in the nation's best interest and that contractors want and deserve certainty. "I think we will have the votes," he said.

Without the bill or a short-term extension, federal aid transportation aid to states would expire, as well as the government's ability to collect federal gasoline and diesel taxes ? 18.4 cents a gallon and 24.4 cents, respectively ? that fund most of those programs. Democrats estimate that would cost an existing 1.8 million transportation-related jobs, as well as forgo another estimated 1 million jobs the bill would create.

Similarly, interest rates for on new subsidized Stafford loans for college students would double to 6.8 percent beginning Sunday. That automatic increase was approved by Congress five years ago to save money. The bill extends the current 3.4 percent rate for 12 months, saving some 7.4 million students an average $1,000 in higher interest costs over the life of the loan, typically a decade or longer.

Congressional leaders rolled the highway and student loan into a single bill because both are financed in part with pension law changes. Aides said the pension proposals might end up raising more than $18 billion in the final legislation.

The extension of the federal flood insurance program was added to the bill this week. It protects 5.6 million households and businesses and addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

Palestinian: US supports 'an apartheid system'

BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK ? At the Aida Refugee Camp, a few blocks from Israel?s separation wall, is the Al Rowwad Cultural and Theater Center founded by Dr. Abdelfattah Abusrour in 1998 with the philosophy of ?beautiful resistance? against the Israeli power over their land.

Abusrour is part of the first generation of children born to refugee parents in the Aida Refugee Camp, which was established in 1950 between the towns of Bethlehem and Beit Jala. It is now home to around 5,000 inhabitants all descendants from the 1948 expulsion from Palestine.

Abusrour considers himself ?fortunate? to have gotten a scholarship to study in France, where he stayed for nine years and got his master?s and Ph.D in biological and medical engineering. But his heart was always also with theater, painting and photography. He came home with the dream of working with children to help shape the future of a Palestinian state.

The center started working with children in refugee camps in the area of Bethlehem and Bet-Jala, but then spread all over the West Bank with mobile ?beautiful resistance? programs in theater, dance and music training.

He explained the center?s philosophy: ?Resistance, because we are under occupation still until today and we have this right to resist the occupation; and beautiful, to reflect all this beauty, this humanity, this culture, this heritage, this beautiful heritage of unarmed struggle that the Palestinians have carried over the years even before Gandhi and Martin Luther King.?

    ?

U.S. is ?supportive of an apartheid system that is suffocating us?

The center takes some of the children to tour and perform internationally.

?We go internationally to give the children the possibility to see real, free and peaceful countries without checkpoints, without tear gas, without occupation soldiers,? said Abusrour.

Children have toured in the United States, among many other countries.?

Abusrour says he was very eager to tour with the children in the U.S. because it is the richest, most powerful democracy in the world. But he also wanted to show them that even in the biggest democracy, injustice can be found.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

?We took our children to poor areas like Afro-American neighborhoods because it was important for me to show them as Palestinians that there are equal injustices in other places of the world,? he said.

While he appreciates the power of the U.S., Abusrour believes that as a country, it is not living up to its ideals. ?

?The United States of America is a country like any other country. It has its beauty and faults," said Abusrour. He added that it is "the land of free and the brave, apparently, and they are violating the values that they pretend defending.?

For many Palestinians, it is hard to ignore the long-term support the U.S. has given and continues to give Israel for its security. ?Many find it hard to understand how a country like the U.S., which plays a leading role in shaping the policies of other countries, can help Israel?s continuous violation of the Palestinian?s rights.

?As a Palestinian I see that [the U.S.] is supportive of an apartheid system that is suffocating us, that is continuing a violation of human rights and human values that we share as Palestinians,? said Abusrour. ?I see the governments of the United States of America, one after the other, supporting this illegal occupation.??

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps stayed on course for their second showdown at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials on Tuesday. Janet Evans' first appearance in the meet was brief, with the 40-year-old former Olympic champion failing to advance to the 400 freestyle final.

Lochte qualified fastest in the 200-meter freestyle preliminaries, exploding off the final turn to take the lead and cruise into the wall at 1 minute, 48.14 seconds. He's the world champion in the event, having beaten Phelps for the title last year in Shanghai.

Charlie Houchin, a 24-year-old from Raleigh, N.C., who was 77th in the 200 free at the 2008 trials, was second-fastest at 1:48.15. Swimming in the heat before Lochte, Phelps qualified third at 1:48.31. He is the Olympic champion and world record holder.

Evans finished seventh in her heat at 4:21.49 ? 6.81 seconds behind 19-year-old winner Danielle Siverling ? and 80th overall. But Evans, who won the 400 free as one of her three golds at the 1988 Olympics, was merely using the event as a warm-up for the 800 free. She is a long shot in that grueling event after a 15-year absence from the sport.

"I wish I would've gone faster. I didn't feel very good," said Evans, who got big cheers when she was introduced during the race and after she climbed out. "It was nice to get the jitters out. I think that my 800 will be better."

Budding star Missy Franklin and two-time Olympic champion Natalie Coughlin advanced in the 100 backstroke prelims.

Lochte got the better of Phelps in their first final at trials when he won the 400 individual medley on Monday. Phelps finished second, and they both secured spots for London.

Phelps has set himself up for another eight-event program in London ? something he insisted he wouldn't do again after the Beijing Games.

"It's not an easy program, but we're going to try to do some things here," he said. "The biggest thing is really how I hold up all week. I was definitely happy with getting last night out of the way early. It wasn't the easiest race. But this morning felt pretty comfortable, so hopefully we can just keep everything rolling for the rest of the meet."

Can Phelps repeat his historic haul of eight golds?

"Anything can happen," he said. "You've got to be in the right place at the right time."

Lochte returned later for the 100 backstroke and qualified nearly a second behind fellow 2008 Olympian Matt Grevers. He touched in 52.94 to Lochte's 53.92.

Lochte was breathing hard coming off the deck after his double and he later scratched the event from his busy schedule to focus on the 200 free.

"The 100 back hurt worse than the 2 free," he said. "The 2 free was really just smooth."

Grevers, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist, wanted to see Lochte in the semifinals.

"The Olympics are all about racing the best in the world," he said. "I'd be sad if he wasn't in it because I'd know one of the best in the world would be missing out."

In the women's 400 free, Katie Hoff joined Evans on the sideline after finishing 20th in 4:13.08. Hoff won the event four years ago at trials ? one of her five victories that had her dubbed the female Phelps. Her coach, Paul Yetter, said she was feeling sick from something she ate.

Hoff has just the 200 free remaining to try to make her third straight Olympic team.

"I hope she'll be able to get herself eating today and feeling better," Yetter said. "I've never seen her look that white."

Allison Schmitt was the top qualifier in the 400 free at 4:05.60. Katie Ledecky, a 15-year-old from Bethesda, Md., was second at 4:05.78. Also advancing to Sunday's final were Chloe Sutton, Elizabeth Beisel and Kate Ziegler.

Swimming her first event of the eight-day meet, Franklin was the top qualifier in 59.54 seconds, easily moving the 17-year-old from Colorado into the evening semifinals.

"I had some first-race jitters," she said. "But I'm super, super happy with my time. It felt awesome."

Franklin saw the sign under the massive scoreboard above the pool as she stroked to the opposite end of the pool.

"It was U.S. Olympic Team. Talk about motivation. That helped me get my tempo up the last 25," she said. "I was nervous for my first race. But right now, I feel good."

Franklin led a quartet of teenagers who represent the U.S. future in the event. Rachel Bootsma, an 18-year-old from Minnesota, was second at 59.69, making her and Franklin the only women to go under 1 minute.

Elizabeth Pelton, an 18-year-old from Connecticut, was third at 1:00.55. Olivia Smoliga, a 17-year-old from suburban Chicago, was fourth-quickest at 1:00.66.

Coughlin advanced in fifth at 1:00.71. She was the first woman to break 1 minute in the event and formerly held the world record.

The top 16 in the semifinals move on to Wednesday's final, where only the top two earn berths for next month's Olympics.

World champion Rebecca Soni led the way in the 100 breaststroke, coming on strongly over the final 50 meters to win her prelim heat in 1:06.33.

Breeja Larson showed no nerves in her first Olympic trials, turning in the third-fastest time in the world this year to qualify second-quickest at 1:06.52. The sophomore at Texas A&M didn't start swimming competitively until age 17 in her hometown of Mesa, Ariz.

Jessica Hardy, who won the 100 breast at trials four years ago only to lose her spot on the Olympic team because of a failed doping test, was third at 1:07.25. Hardy served a one-year ban after an arbitration panel agreed with her contention that a tainted nutritional supplement was to blame for her positive test.

Still, she battled anger and depression during the fight to clear her name.

"This is the first time I felt like I can actually have a happy ending," she said. "I can relax and finally have fun and feel grateful."

Soni caught Hardy's time as she was waiting to come on deck.

Amanda Beard, the 1996 Olympic silver medalist in the 100 breast, qualified seventh for the evening semifinals. The 30-year-old mother of one is trying to make her fifth Olympic team, but the 100 is not her best event and she will have to pick up the pace to make the eight-woman final.

Ways To Pay For Pilot Training

Ways To Pay For Pilot Training

Flight training is a very costly. You will need to pay for the rental of the airplane, instructor, and other materials. There are lots of little and not so little costs. The cold reality is that not everyone with a dream of flight will be able to afford it. The purpose of this article is to present some ideas on ways to pay for flight training.

    Trade something for training

If you have a skill that is beneficial to a flight school like being web designer or accountant many flight schools would like somebody to maintain their web page or help them maintain the books and pay the taxes. It might be as simple as washing the airplanes and mowing the grass. Don?t be afraid to ask your local flight school or FBO to determine what they any interest.

    Scholarships

There are scholarships available for flight training albeit some may not be for very much every little bit helps. Scholarships listed below were found on the FAA website

    • National Coalition for Aviation Education
    • AeroClub of New England
    • Aircraft Electronics Association
    • LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Scholarship
    • Boeing Scholarships
    • Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships & Awards
    • University Aviation Association Aviation Scholarship Guide
    • Girls With Wings Scholarship
    • Astronaut Scholarship Foundation

The Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association also have several Aviation scholarships available.

Buy an aircraft and lease it back

You might find it interesting, that most aircraft available at the flight school are not aren't actually owned by the flight school that rents and maintains them. They are owned by someone else and the flight school pays them for the use of the aircraft. Talk to an accountant, to determine if after the flight school takes out the operating costs if there is an opportunity for a small profit that you could use to fund your flight training.

    Start an Aircraft Side Business

You might consider starting an aircraft washing business at the airport. The business could also be an interior detailing service. Before your start make sure you have talked to several owners to understand how to properly clean an aircraft. The exterior cleaning should include a complete exterior wash, degrease, bug removal, clean and polish of the windows. The interior cleaning would include interior vacuuming and all interior windows cleaned.

You could expect to make the following:

    ? $50 for a 4 place airplane

    ? $350 for a small jet

This is by far not the most complete list, for the entrepreneurial pilot the ways to pay for flight time is endless. Some are more profitable than others, but every little bit helps.

Greenland ice may exaggerate magnitude of 13,000-year-old deep freeze

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Ice samples pulled from nearly a mile below the surface of Greenland glaciers have long served as a historical thermometer, adding temperature data to studies of the local conditions up to the Northern Hemisphere's climate.

But the method -- comparing the ratio of oxygen isotopes buried as snow fell over millennia -- may not be such a straightforward indicator of air temperature.

"We don't believe the ice cores can be interpreted purely as a signal of temperature," says Anders Carlson, a University of Wisconsin-Madison geosciences professor. "You have to consider where the precipitation that formed the ice came from."

According to a study published June 25 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Greenland ice core drifts notably from other records of Northern Hemisphere temperatures during the Younger Dryas, a period beginning nearly 13,000 years ago of cooling so abrupt it's believed to be unmatched since.

Such periods of speedy cooling and warming are of special interest to climate scientists, who are teasing out the mechanisms of high-speed change to better understand and predict the changes occurring in our own time.

In the case of the Younger Dryas, average temperatures -- based on the Greenland ice -- plummeted as much as 15 degrees Celsius in a few centuries, and then shot back up nearly as much (over just decades) about 1,000 years later.

"In terms of temperature during the Younger Dryas, the only thing that looks like Greenland ice cores are Greenland ice cores," Carlson says. "They are supposed to be iconic for the Northern Hemisphere, but we have four other records that do not agree with the Greenland ice cores for that time. That abrupt cooling is there, just not to the same degree."

Working with UW-Madison climatologist Zhengyu Liu, collaborators at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and others, Carlson found their computer climate model breaking down on the Younger Dryas.

While it could reliably recreate temperatures in the Oldest Dryas -- a similar cooling period about 18,000 years ago -- they just couldn't find a lever in the model that would simulate a Younger Dryas that matched the Greenland ice cores.

"You can totally turn off ocean circulation, have Arctic sea ice advance all the way across the North Atlantic, and you still will have a warmer climate during the Younger Dryas than the Oldest Dryas because of the carbon dioxide," Carlson says.

By the time the Younger Dryas rolled around, there was more carbon dioxide in the air -- about 50 parts per million more. The warming effects of that much CO2 overwhelmed the rest of the conditions that make the Oldest and Younger Dryas so alike, and demonstrates a heightened sensitivity for Arctic temperatures to rising greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The researchers zeroed in on the Northern Hemisphere's temperature outlier, Greenland ice cores, and found that the conversion of oxygen isotope ratio to temperature typically used on the ice cores did not account for the sort of crash climate change occurring during the Younger Dryas. It assumes prevailing winds and jet streams and storm tracks are providing the moisture for Greenland precipitation from the Atlantic Ocean.

"The Laurentide ice sheet, which covered much of North America down into the northern United States, is getting smaller as the Younger Dryas approaches," Carlson says. "That's like taking out a mountain of ice three kilometers high. As that melts, it allows more Pacific Ocean moisture to cross the continent and hit the Greenland ice sheet." The two oceans have distinctly different ratios of oxygen isotopes, allowing for a different isotope ratio where the water falls as snow.

"We ran an oxygen isotope-enabled atmosphere model, so we could simulate what these ice cores are actually recording, and it can match the actual oxygen isotopes in the ice core even though the temperature doesn't cool as much," Carlson says. "That, to us, means the source of precipitation has changed in Greenland across the last deglatiation. And therefore that the strict interpretation of this iconic record as purely temperature of snowfall above this ice sheet is wrong."

By the study's findings, Greenland temperatures may not have cooled as significantly as climate headed into the Younger Dryas relative to the Oldest Dryas, because of the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide that had occurred since the Oldest Dryas.

"You can say at the end of the Younger Dryas it warmed 10, plus or minus five, degrees Celsius. But what happened on this pathway into the event, you can't see," Carlson says. It's a fresh reminder from an ancient ice core that climate science is full of nuance, according to Carlson.

"Abrupt climate changes have happened, but they come with complex shifts in the way climate inputs like moisture moved around," he says. "You can't take one difference and interpret it solely as changes in temperature, and that's what we're seeing here in the Greenland ice cores."

The National Science Foundation and Department of Energy funded the research.

Research Links Physical Activity with Reduced Breast Cancer Risk ...

Physical-ActivityA recent study claimed that there are fair chances that physical activity can reduce breast cancer risk, thereby sending a message across to those who are victim of sedentary lifestyle. It has been claimed by a team from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that women can reduce the breast cancer risk significantly by indulging in physical exercise.

Published early online in Cancer, which is a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study though has recommended physical activity, it?s yet not clear to what extent physical workout is required.

For the research, Lauren McCullough, who is a doctoral candidate at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, examined the chances of finding out association between physical activity which has been done at different stages of life and risk attached with breast cancer. The study involved 1,504 women with breast cancer and 1, 555 women without breast cancer.

"The observation of a reduced risk of breast cancer for women who engaged in exercise after menopause is particularly encouraging given the late age of onset for breast cancer?, said Lauren McCullough, while asserting that active women can reduce risk attacked with various diseases. There is need for women to inculcate regular exercise in daily life for a healthy life ahead.

    Introducing: Miriam Kramer

This is a series of Q&As with young and up-and-coming science, health and environmental writers and reporters. They ? at least some of them ? have recently hatched in the Incubators (science writing programs at schools of journalism), have even more recently fledged (graduated), and are now making their mark as wonderful new voices explaining science to the public.

Today we introduce you to Miriam Kramer (Scienceline blog, Twitter).

Hello, welcome to the SA Incubator. Let?s start from the beginning: where are you originally from?

Hi, and thanks for asking me to do this, Bora! I grew up in Knoxville, Tenn., the home of the Tennessee Volunteers, deep fried pickles, and a quick drive from the Great Smoky Mountains. So, if I?m honest, it was quite the shock moving up to the concrete jungle that is New York City. Somewhat regrettably, I sound more like I?m from New York than Tennessee, so you?re just going to have to take my Southern roots on faith.

How did you get into science writing?

Well, I?d like to say that it was a long strange trip, but unlike many of my colleagues and classmates, it wasn?t. I always knew that I wanted to go into journalism.

My freshman year of college at the University of Tennessee I started taking media classes fully expecting to run around the country writing about rock stars. But fortunately (or unfortunately), I fell in love with science instead.

I took a writing internship designing and developing content for the microbiology department?s newsletter, and it turned out to be the single best decision of my young life. Somehow I convinced my too-cool boss, Steven Wilhelm, to take me to Beijing to cover a conference, and I was hooked. I loved seeing the weird relationships scientists had developed with each other over the years, clashes of personality, and of course, the rivalries. I remember thinking to myself, ?Man, if there?s a career that lets me observe this for the rest of my life, sign me up!?

So, with the help of an amazing professor and mentor, Mark Littmann, I learned how to write about science well, and I haven?t looked back since. Now scientists are my rock stars!

Why did you decide to attend a specialized science/health/environmental writing program instead of a generalized journalism or writing program, or just starting a blog and hoping to break into the science writing business?

Oddly enough, I did apply to a couple non-science writing specific M.A. programs, but none of them wanted me! I think they knew I was too focused on science, health and the environment to succeed in a general journalism program.

The way I see it, SHERP (Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program at NYU) is a fast track to the jobs and career I want. I could have decided to just slog away at it on my own, but I couldn?t pass up the opportunity to move to New York City.

Most importantly, however, NYU provides me with a safe space to fail. I feel like I?m free to make mistakes, poke around and see what I like. That?s invaluable when you?re first starting your career, especially in an intense profession like journalism.

Do you write a personal or science blog ? How much do you use social media networks, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr, YouTube etc., to promote your own and your friends? work, to learn and to connect?

I really should be blogging, but I just haven?t found the time yet. I?m pretty active on Twitter, even though I used to rail against it, and I use Facebook to keep up with old friends.

I love using social media to promote my work and the work of others. All of my classmates have active Twitter lives, so it?s always fun to see how many people tweet your work, and how often we tweet about each other.

What professional experience you have had so far ??publications, internships, jobs? Feel free to include a bunch of links here! What is your current job?

Oy, I should just post my resume! Last summer I interned at Oak Ridge National Laboratory writing press releases in their communications office, but my current internship with Popular Mechanics is a little more in line with my SHERP training. I?ve been writing stories about everything from how researchers investigate the core of the Earth to a slideshow on a new museum exhibit and a bunch of stuff in between.

Last semester I produced a video with my classmate, Kelly Slivka that ended up being featured in the New York Times. I?m still not quite sure how we pulled that off, but it was an incredible experience. We had the best time editing and shooting.

I?m not sure if this counts as ?professional,??but I?m probably most proud of a blog I wrote for Scienceline.org (our student-run science news site) about the recent passage of an anti-evolution bill in my home state. It felt great to know that I could write articulately and honestly about something so personal, while still contributing to the discussion as a journalist.

How do you see the current and future science media ecosystem, how it differs from the past, and what role will new, young science communicators like yourself play in building it and making it the best it can be?

I think that there is so much more transparency within science media today. We all tweet. Everybody blogs. Journalists?science journalists especially?are really starting to put their writing and reporting processes on display, and I think it?s fantastic. Gone are the days when a journalist can keep their process a secret. The Internet puts it all out there.

Some people are concerned that citizen journalism will eventually overpower the ?real??journalists on the web, but I don?t think that?s fair. As professionals, journalists write and report on a different level than anyone with a blog and a part time job could. There?s room in this interconnected world for everyone!

Personally, I think this might be the most exciting time to be a journalist. Nobody has any idea what the media landscape will look like in the next year, and sure, that?s some terrifying, shaky ground to stand on, but it?s also incredibly freeing. We can literally do anything we want. We, as young journalists, have the unique opportunity to change our profession to fit our needs and the needs of our readers. How many other people can say that?

    Thank you!

    No, Bora, thank YOU!
