State of the Computer Book Market, part 1: Overall Market - O'Reilly ...

Since last year's State of the Computer Book Market posts, the Tech Book market has been going through some major changes, but none more profoundly affecting our industry as Borders Group Inc (BGI) going out of business. Much of what you will see in the 2012 trends are directly related to BGI's demise, though the faint signals that the book market provides to other industries are still evident.

You can get a quick refresher on how we see Computer Book Sales as a Technology Trend Indicator and our other posts on the State of the Computer Book Market.

The data in the posts that will follow, are from Bookscan's weekly top 3,000 titles sold. Bookscan measures actual cash register sales in bookstores. Simply put, whenever you buy a technology-oriented book in the United States, there's a high probability it will get recorded in this data. There are now two major Retailers in Tech books and they are: Barnes & Noble, and Amazon and they make up the lion's share of Bookscan's recorded sales.

Before we get to the specifics of the computer book market, let's get some context by looking at the whole book market for the week ending December 25, 2011. Everything that is printed, bound, and sold as a book, from Steve Jobs and Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back to Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever and StrengthsFinder 2.0 is represented in the table below.

Overall Book Market - EVERYTHING - Week Ending: 2011-12-25

All Books, All Subjects
Category Share YoY
Adult Non-Fiction 40% -8%
Computers 1% 2%
Adult Fiction 19% -11%
Juvenile Non-Fiction 6% 11%
Juvenile Fiction 25% 10%
Other 9% -30%
Total 100% -9.25%

As you can see, the computer market is up about 2% from last year which is much better than the whole market being down more than -9%. It should be noted that the computer book market makes up only about 1% of total unit sales in bookstores and online retailers. Also, for this report and the following four posts, I am using a data that is aggregated from weekly reports of the Top 3000 titles in Bookscan. So the numbers for all the long-tail titles are not included here. In other words the data in the table above shows a 2% growth and yet our top 3000 data shows a 0.7% growth. This actually means that a considerable number of long-tail titles sold in 2011 yet did not make it past the minimum threshold to make a weekly top 3000 report. If you would like to see the performance of the major book categories, this table shows percentage growth. I find it interesting that the Religion/Bibles category is the largest-growing category in an otherwise depressed market. Only 10 out of the 47 overall categories showed growth in 2011 and the computer category was one of them. We'll look at precisely what fueled the growth for the computer category in future posts.

Now on to the technology book market. The four charts below provide some perspective into how each year stacks up against prior years from a Units and Title Count as well as Average Pages per book, and Average Price per book. The third and fourth charts provide context to how many new Titles were published during a given year and what the threshold was to make the Top 3000 report on a weekly basis. The chart on the top left shows the overall units sold per year with the Red Line showing the number of distinct titles that made the Bookscan Top 3000 weekly report. Looking at the two together provides a better insight into what happened. Basically as fewer units were sold, it looks as though more titles were published. Yet as you can see in the chart at the bottom of the four charts, there were fewer new titles in 2011 that contributed to the total units sold. So this leads me to believe that the numeric threshold to get into the dataset of the Top 3000 titles sold on a weekly basis was lower than previous years. And in fact the bottom right chart shows this was the case as 2011 had the lowest threshold in all years measured. So fewer books made the data with fewer of them being new and they had fewer pages and were priced lower on average than ever before. And yet the market showed a slight increase, so this must have come as a result of a few stellar performers that were likely titles published before 2011. We'll explore this in the coming posts, so hang on to this thought.

Immediately below is the weekly trend (from the Top 3000 titles reported weekly) for the entire computer book market since 2004, when we first obtained reliable data from Bookscan. Please remember that the data represents all publishers, and not just O'Reilly. The slightly thicker red line represents the 2011 data.

The clear seasonal pattern that we've pointed out before still exists, but with more extreme fluctuations. That is, we have a strong start that declines through the summer, spikes for the fall "Back to School" season, and finishes the year strong. And each subsequent year closely mirrors the year before but with usually a percent tick or two lower. But the biggest news for 2011 was that we had some weeks that were clearly above prior years and one week that was the highest we've seen for all the years. However, this boon comes through the unfortunate Borders fire sale, and then the eventual liquidation of their remaining inventory. In my opinion, it is too early to predict what long-term effect we will see with Borders gone, because as you'll notice as soon as their doors closed, the market hit bottom. Not only did it hit bottom, but the market tanked further down than we have ever seen it. But the reason I still think we are not in a pattern of predictability yet is that the December climb up was higher than the four previous years. So in a nutshell, 2011 was a year of our highest highs and our lowest lows and that was likely due to the Borders situation.

What you won't see on this chart is that the computer book market suffered its biggest losses in 2001 and then began shrinking 20 percent a year for 3 years, until it stabilized in 2004 at about half the size it was in 2000. (We have consistent and reliable data going back to 2004.) You can now see a second cratering in the market that started in the second half of 2008 and continued through 2010 until the more volatile and unpredictable 2011. The overall market growth rates for the previous seven years are: 2005 = 1.48%; 2006 = 3.17%; 2007 = -2.00%; 2008 = -4.27%; 2009 = -15.31%; 2010 = -4.29%; 2011 = +0.7%

So what about that market was news in 2011 other than Borders? In 2011, There were 21 weeks in the year that were ahead of the same week in 2010. In 2010 there were 11 weeks that were ahead of the prior year unit sales and in 2009, there were only two weeks that were ahead of the prior year. I am not willing to state that we are seeing a recovery in the market because a .7% growth is not exactly a strong signal in the right direction. To the optimists in the crowd, it appears as though we have seen bottom in October through November of 2011 ? but pessimists will believe that they've seen this before: the market looks as though it hit bottom, but then takes another big hit downward. 2009 (the green line) was a turbulent rollercoaster ride to the bottom as well. So at this time the market is really too unstable to predict whether it will move down again or continue to recover.

Another way to look at the market is with the Treemap visualization tool. This tool helps us pick up on trends quickly, even when looking at thousands of books. It works like this:

The size of a square shows the market share and relative size of a category, while the color shows the rate of change in sales. Red is down, and green is up, with the intensity of the color representing the magnitude of the change. The following screenshot of our treemap shows gains and losses by category, comparing the fourth quarter of 2011 with the fourth quarter of 2010.

So what are all the boxes and colors telling us? First remember that this is compares the last quarters of the previous two years.

There were quite a few bright spots (bright green) during the last quarter of 2011. Take a look at Android Programming (in the upper-left box), the bright-green box showing growth from the fourth quarter of 2010. Right next to Android is iOS which is larger in size, but Black which means flat growth. You will also see Android again in bright-green (upper-middle box) ? the difference is that the upper-left is for programmer-oriented books and the upper-middle is for Android consumer books [using your Droid]. Both had impressive growth in 2011 compared to 2010. In the upper-middle area is iPad and iPhone for consumers which where flat or down. I wonder if the iPhone 4GS was as big of a hit as the iPhone 4. The iPad, the upper-middle big black square, continues to impress with how big the box is at this early point in its evolution, and is flat because both years have netted lots of units sold. Look at Windows 7 just below iPad and notice that the iPad size is about 3/5 as big as Windows 7. That is amazing to me, as the iPad has grown to be almost as big as the business desktop operating system.

In 2010, Windows 7 was the number one growth area for units, followed by iPad, then Android (for consumers), and Android programming. This is unit growth, and a bit of the success for these technologies is that they are fairly new and do not have large market shares as a base to be measured against Looking at longer-established technologies, Security and Network Security and Digital Photography had strong unit growth.

I find it useful to organize the trends into classifications that are High Growth Categories bright green, Moderate Growth Categories dark green to black, Categories to Watch all colors, and Down Categories red to bright red. Most of these descriptions are self-explanatory, except perhaps Categories to Watch. This group contains titles that we've found are not typically susceptible to seasonal swings, as well as areas on our editorial radar. If there are categories you want to get on our watch list, please let me know.

The table below highlights and explains some of the data from the chart above, although the data is for all of 2011. The Share column shows the total market share of that category, and the ROC column shows the Rate of Change (RoC = (current_period - prev_period) / prev_period). So, for example, you can see that Mac OS books represent 2.79% of the entire computer book market, and were shrinking by -7.49% (RoC).

High Growth Share ROC Notes
iPad 04.46% 65.57% From no presence in 2009, to a 1.74% market share in 2011, to the the largest market share for all topics in 2011. Ironically, physical books about the iPad, sell.
Nook 00.86% 100.00% This category had no 2010 presence, but is now the 29th largest category in market share. Again, the irony of this ? content about a book reader sells well in physical form.
iPhone 01.97% 21.65% This category has seen steady increases each year except in 2010. 2011 almost matched its high point in units which was in 2009. Of all categories it is ranked 6th in 2011.
JavaScript 00.98% 18.79% 2011 saw nearly 12,000 more units sold than 2010. 2006 was the high mark for JavaScript with 323 more units sold than 2011 but last year had the biggest growth year-over-year.
Computers and Society 01.11% 32.53% This area reached its highest ever point for unit sales and moved to the 16th ranked area in 2011. It ranks 45th on the all time list.
?
Moderate Growth Share ROC Notes
Java 01.32% 08.27% A nice steady pattern for Java now. Growth in each of the previous three years. It is the 12th largest category overall and reached that same rank in 2011.
Web Design 01.03% 05.17% This category pattern is like a roller-coaster, up and down. Overall it ranks 13th, but in 2011 it was 22nd even though it showed modest growth compared with 2010.
C++ 00.93% 06.87% A language that was built to last, and used to build things that last. The overall sales pattern is inconsistent. Its overall rank is 19th and in 2011 it was 25th.
CSS 00.78% 06.34% The pattern here has been downward since 2007 but in 2011 there was modest growth. Overall it is ranked 24th and in 2011 it was 31st.
Game Development 00.73% 08.96% Growth in the previous two years is fueled in part by new books on mobile game development. About 15% of the new Game Dev books were covered mobile.
?
Categories to Watch Share ROC Notes
Office Suites 2.71% 6.88% Our fourth largest category for all years measured and usually consistent. The fact that this category is up may be attributable to new Laptops and Desktops being purchased.
Digital Photography 05.71% -3.17% A very large category with five 2011 titles producing more than 10,000 units sold. 2011 had 6 additional titles making the list, yet the category sold -11,533 fewer units than 2010.
Spreadsheets 04.53% 0.41% The third largest category, with 3 titles selling more than 10,000 units; 13 fewer titles made the list in 2011 yet produced 1,172 more units than 2010.
Software Project Management 01.97% -04.74% A good-size and consistent category, though it is down in units sold. 31 additional titles in this category produced 5,941 fewer units in 2011. PMP and Agile still drive the category from a units perspective.
?
Down Categories Share ROC Notes
Windows Consumer 04.36% -49.63% All time the second largest category, yet the saw 21 fewer titles make the list in 2011 and -137,958 fewer units sold. Perhaps a signal that Tablets are becoming more important than the desktop?
Web Programming 01.68% -17.77% Historically, the 4th largest category yet in 2011 37 fewer titles made the list and -19,083 fewer units were sold. This loss is attributed mostly the PHP & MySQL books that used to dominate the web programming space.
MacOS 02.79% -07.49% This category is ranked #5 for all time, yet the past two years have seen significant decreases. 18 more titles made the list in 2011, but they produced -13,309 fewer units. Could it be that Snow Leopard and Lion were not significant enough releases? Or are tablets eroding this category too?
Flash 00.77% -45.30% Overall ranked 14th, this category has dropped in market share from 2.01% to .77%; it ranked 34th in 2010 and now 45th in 2011. HTML5 seems to be the clear influence in this space.
Web Design Tools 01.12% -21.35% All time ranking of 8th, yet this is the second year in a row this category takes it on the chin with -15,196 fewer units sold and 8 fewer titles making the list in 2011. The decline in this category is mostly attributed to Dreamweaver.

Post 2 in this series will provide a closer look at the technologies within the categories. Post 3 will be about the publishers, both winners and losers. Post 4 will contain more analysis of programming languages, and Post 5 will look at digital sales.

Phoenix Air Conditioning - All About Air Conditioning

The very first building to ever use air conditioning units to both cool and heat the air was the New York Stock Exchange. This took place in 1902. Later that year, Willis Havilland Carrier installed the very first electrically-run air conditioning unit at a printing plant. The unit not only cooled the air but also controlled the humidity.

We all know that air conditioning makes you feel cool, but there is more to it than just cooling us down. It means keeping the temperature and humidity (moisture content) of air in an enclosed space, whether it is one room or an entire building, at just the right level for the comfort of the people inside. It can also circulate the air, adding in moisture to it as necessary. During the summer it typically means removing the heat by passing the air over and through cold pipes that collect water from the air itself. This works similar to the way water condenses on a cold glass of water on a hot day. In fact, we might almost say that air conditioning means creating an artificial, comfortable climate. In this article we shall discuss only cooling.

A phoenix air conditioning unit cools the air through a refrigerant, a substance that alters the temperature of the air. In the early stages of its development, air conditioning units used harmful gases such as ammonia and methyl chloride as refrigerants. They were soon replaced by another type of chemical, the patented substance called Freon.

Air conditioning has a ton of uses besides keeping us comfortable. Many industries depend on it to keep the air in their plants clean, cool and at the right moisture level. For example, textile fiber such as wool and cotton will stretch or shrink as the moisture content in the air changes. This causes many subtle variations in the quality of the cloth. Too much moisture in the air -or even on a worker's fingertips- will cause delicate metal parts such as rocket components or precision instruments instrument to corrode. The wrong temperature can easily spoil a batch of antibiotic culture. Proper air conditioning prevents this mishap from ever taking place.

Air conditioning units usually have different types of refrigeration cycles. The first type uses a heat pump that drives out hot air from the room and brings in cooled air though a compressor. The second type pumps in a refrigerant. When the refrigerant evaporates, it takes with it the hot air and leaves cooled air for us to enjoy.

Inventors have tinkered with methods of air conditioning for years. Ancient Egyptians and Romans got some relief from the heat by hanging woven mats soaked with water across to their entrances of their houses, so the air would be could by evaporation.

As phoenix air conditioning became more popular during the 1930's, central air conditioning systems were developed. These could easily cool the whole office or apartment building from one centrally located unit, just as buildings were heated from one big furnace in the basement instead of using little stoves in each room. During the same period of time small units that could air condition a single room were developed. After World War 2 large numbers of small units began to be used in private homes. A later development, used increasingly in public buildings and private homes alike, combined heating and cooling units into one amazing system.

To be practical, an air conditioning unit must be able to maintain a consistent temperature. Otherwise people would like just have to turn off their units and then turn them back on throughout the day as the temperature become too cold or hot. A steady temperature-regulating device called thermostat. The thermostat is set at a desired temperature. It then switches the cooling unit on and off as needed throughout the day.

Steven Johns has been an a/c repair specialist for over 12 years. He's seen it all. And now he's working to help fix all the phoenix air conditioning problems that crop up. He's doing a great job of it, too, so be sure to talk to him if you need a little bit of help in that area!

France shootings siege: Live Report

1247 GMT: Police say are treating seriously a call to news channel France 24 by a man claiming to be the hunted killer. The call came two hours before special forces cornered the suspect. Claiming to be affiliated to Al-Qaeda, the caller said "either I will go prison with my head held high or I will die with a smile," according to journalist Ebba Kalondo.

1227 GMT: More details are emerging about the suspect, with French Interior Minister Claude Gueant saying he was part of a group of Islamic Salafist fundamentalists in Toulouse who had made two trips to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He carried out at least 18 minor crimes, reports say, and was arrested in Afghanistan's former Taliban stronghold Kandahar in late 2010 for an unspecified crime, according to a source close to the inquiry.

1212 GMT: At the scene - The murder suspect has resumed negotiations with police, officers say. He had cut off talks with police about two hours earlier.

1210 GMT: Referring to a "polite and courteous" man, Etelin describes Merah as "a gentle, amenable individual and certainly not a fanatic." He said his client had served a prison sentence for "a common crime" after snatching a bag from someone in a bank.

1157 GMT: Lawyer Christian Etelin, who has defended Merah over various petty crimes since 2004, tells BFM-TV that "the situation and what I know of his personality, with certain fragile aspects, leads me to fear unpredictable behaviour."

1147 GMT: In Toulouse - Several young men, presenting themselves as friends of Merah, have arrived near the scene where he is holed up in a flat, offering to act as mediators, AFP's Nicolas Gaudichet reports. Police are asking them to wait.

1143 GMT: According to a police source, Mohammed Merah, born October 10, 1988, in Toulouse, had recently been refused entry into the army. His killing methods suggest someone who was trained and used to using weapons.

1132 GMT: The France 24 journalist who received a call claiming responsibility for the attacks describes the caller as "a very eloquent young man and "very, very calm". "He said that it was to avenge the law against wearing the veil and France's participation in the war in Afghanistan and also to protest against the situation in Palestine," she tells France Info.

1102 GMT: Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad says extremists must stop "marketing their terrorist acts in the name of Palestine" and "stop pretending to stand up for the rights of Palestinian children who only ask for a decent life". The shooting suspect claims to have acted to avenge Palestinian children, France's interior minister said earlier.

1046 GMT: Those neighbours trapped in the besieged flats, who were pleading to be let out, have in fact now been evacuated, police say. Officers said they were in shock and were being offered psychological support.

1040 GMT: At the scene - Neighbours trapped inside the five-storey apartment building besieged by French special forces in Toulouse are pleading for authorities to get them out. "You must ask them to get us out!" a sobbing woman told France Info radio by telephone, saying she lived just above the first floor flat where the suspect was holed up.

1035 GMT: Palestinian diplomatic missions in France condemn the "hateful" Jewish school attack "in the strongest possible terms". "All racist crimes are attacks on humanity in general and on the republic in particular," they said in a statement, issued in the name of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, the Palestinian Authority, and Palestine's missions to France and UNESCO.

1031 GMT: President Nicolas Sarkozy, giving a TV address, says: "Terrorism will not succeed in fracturing our national community".

1028 GMT: French socialist presidential candidate Fran?ois Hollande voices his "relief" that the suspect has been identified and hopes "the operation unfolds normally".

1020 GMT: France's domestic intelligence agency had tracked the suspect "for years", Gueant admits, telling journalists: "He had for several years been tracked by the DCRI and its agents in Toulouse, but there was never anything to suggest that he was preparing a criminal act."

1015 GMT: The French interior minister says the gunman has stopped negotiating with police. "He is no longer talking, the conversations have stopped," Gueant tells journalists in Toulouse. Earlier police said they were in talks with Mohammed Merah who had pledged to surrender later.

1012 GMT: More on the latest arrests... the mother and brother of the suspect has been detained along with the brother's girlfriend, police reveal. Police had said previously that the brother was in custody and that the mother had been taken to the siege scene to try and get her son to surrender.

1009 GMT Sarkozy is also to meet today with the head of the French Muslim Council, Mohammed Moussaoui, and Richard Prasquier, the head of France's main Jewish organisation, the CRIF.

1006 GMT: French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is going to Montauban for the funerals of the three soldiers killed at 1400 GMT, will "pass by Toulouse" and "meet the investigators to thank them", Intererior Minister Claude Gueant announces.

0955 GMT: Police and ministers say the gunman's mother and brother have been arrested and that the shooter has stopped talking to police. More to follow.

0943 GMT: At the funeral of the four school shooting victims, taking place in Jerusalem, Israeli interior minister Eli Yishai says: "There is justice and there is a judge. We hope that the government of France will take the strongest steps against the perpetrators and do everything to ensure the safety of all the Jews in France, to chase out anti-Semitism and its supporters."

0939 GMT: France's top Muslim leader speaks out against the shootings, saying the killer acted against Islam. "These acts are in total contradiction with the foundations of this religion," says the head of the French Muslim Council, Mohammed Moussaoui. "France's Muslims are offended by this claim of belonging to this religion."

0929 GMT: More on the comments from French Interior Minister Claude Gueant ... he says the suspect is thought to be armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Mini-Uzi 9mm machine pistol and other handguns, but has thrown the .45 pistol believed to have been used in the shootings from the window.

"The presumed guilty party asked for a means to communicate with police. In exchange for this means of communication, he threw a Colt .45 from the window. He has certainly thrown one weapon out, but he has others," Gueant told BFM-TV.

Earlier Gueant said the suspect had spoken to officers through the door of his apartment, and declared himself to be a "mujaheedeen" or Islamic warrior fighting to avenge Palestinian children killed in the conflict with Israel.

0913 GMT: The France 24 journalist who received the claim for the attacks during the night tells AFP journalist Nicolas Gaudichet that the man gave her details of the murder, including the number of shots fired and type of weapon used. "He said he was affiliated with Al-Qaeda and that it was only the beginning...that everything was filmed... and that it would be on the web shortly".

0857 GMT: The explosion heard earlier near the building where the suspect is holed up came from the destruction of a vehicle which was blocking police efforts, a source close to the investigation says.

0850 GMT: The besieged suspect has declared he will surrender later today, Interior Minister Claude Gueant says.

"He is currently in a dialogue with a police official and he says, I do not know if he is telling the truth, that he he will hand himself in later in the day," the minister tells BFM-TV news network.

0843 GMT: Back in France, police have named the suspected gunman as Mohammed Merah, 23, of Algerian origin.

0840 GMT: Meanwhile in Jerusalem funerals are under way for the three French-Israeli children and a teacher who were gunned down in the Jewish school shooting, AFP correspondent Selim Saheb Ettaba reports from Israel.

At least 2,000 mourners were gathered at the Givat Shaul cemetery as the four bodies were carried to the gravesite. Among them is French Foreign Minister Alain Jupp? as well as family and friends of the deceased.

0835 GMT: French Interior Minister Claude Gueant says police want to catch the suspect alive. He tells BFM television: "Our main concern is to catch him and to catch him under such conditions that he can be brought to justice."

0830 GMT: A loud blast was heard earlier near the besieged building, an AFP journalist reports.

LIVE REPORT: French police have surrounded a house in Toulouse where a man suspected of a series of deadly shootings is holed up. In this live report AFP will be following the operation as it unfolds.

So far two officers have been wounded after shots were fired at the property under siege in a residential area of the city.

The suspect is a French national of North African origin who has declared himself a member of the Al-Qaeda network, officials said.

In the latest development, police said the suspect had been previously arrested in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar. A source close to the investigation told AFP that the 23-year-old had once been arrested on a matter of common law in the country.

'Lion King' roars into town with a spectacular vision of theatrical ...

It has become a classic coming-of-age story, part of which is the lion cub Simba?s attempt to discover how to roar. All he needed to do, however, was to hear the thunderous roar of the audience at the conclusion of Friday?s opening night performance of ?The Lion King.?

The Tony Award-winning musical has moved in to the Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts for a month-long run, with all the spectacle and theatrical magic that has made it one of Broadway?s biggest hits.

Based on the Disney animated film, its magnificent evolution of the art of puppetry remains an astounding visual feast. The show has one of the grandest opening scenes ever staged, with its veritable parade of flocks of birds, gazelles and antelopes, zebras and giraffes, lions and magnificent rhinos and elephants, all taking to the stage from every part of the theater.

Originally set to reopen the Saenger Theatre, the show is probably a better fit for the Theatre of the Performing Arts. The impact of that opening scene was made all the more powerful within the more expansive yet intimate space.

Director Julie Taymor?s now legendary colorful designs and innovative costuming (which leaves one hoping there?s a chiropractor traveling with the cast) bring the story to life.

It follows the birth and development of young Simba, the son of Mufasa, the king of the jungle. When he blames himself for his father?s death (actually brought on by Scar, his uncle), he flees. The kingdom suffers under the wicked rule of Scar and his band of toadying hyenas. Finally, finding strength through his newfound friendships, the grown Simba returns to claim his place and save his homeland as the conquering hero.

THE LION KING

  • What: The Broadway in New Orleans staging of the musical adaptation of Disney?s animated film about a lion cub?s coming of age. Aimed at ages 6 and up.
  • When: Performances running through April 15.
  • Where: Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts, Armstrong Park.
  • Tickets: $27.50-$110, depending on dates and times, plus convenience charges. For information or to order tickets, call 504.287.0351 or go to Ticketmaster's website.

The rest of the physical production for the touring company reflects the same visual sumptuousness that is seen in the original Broadway show. The only scene that felt smaller to me was the wildebeest stampede, which I remember roaring across the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York. Garth Fagan?s original choreography remains a lively and vital asset to the show.

There are energetic and passionate performances throughout the show?s cast ? one that is especially large for a touring company. Several particular performances do stand out.

Dionne Randolph is a commanding king as Mufasa, bringing a strong sense of authority, dignity and pride to his pride. His scenes with the young Simba are notably touching. His rendition of ?They Live in You? makes it one of the few songs that convey true emotion.

The young Simba on opening night was played with adorable glee by Adante Power, who shares the role with Zavion J. Hill. Jelani Remy plays Simba as an adult lion, finding just the right blend of youthful impetuousness and the wisdom learned from Mufasa.

Scar, a classic Disney villain, gets a divinely wicked performance from J. Anthony Crane. Mark David Kaplan creates most of the comic relief as Zazu.

The success of the look and style of the show, however,?cannot cover its deficiencies. While it has remained the king, indeed, of Disney?s ever-growing Broadway empire, it may be the weakest adaptation of the film on which it is based.

For all of its magic and artistry, the musical doesn?t capture the deep emotion of the basically simple story as well as it does in the animated film. Taymor is so enamored of her own designs that she doesn?t allow certain quieter moments to hold center stage unencumbered by extraneous activity. She should trust her performers and the story they have to tell to hold the audience?s attention.

Secondly, with the exception of a couple of songs, the pop score by Elton John and Tim Rice fails to have a cohesiveness that could tie the show together with more sophistication. Additional songs by composers as varied as Lebo M and Hans Zimmer add to the incongruity. (The Alan Menken and Howard Ashman score to ?Beauty and the Beast,? for example, remains not only the gold standard for Disney musicals, but for any big, Broadway show.)

For a show largely aimed at a children?s audience, it does go on too long. By the end of the overly extended second act, many children who begin the night with stars in their eyes will wind up asleep on one of their parent's shoulders.

Then there?s also the intensity of the tale, which parents should take into account ? Mufasa?a death is a traumatic moment. But then, Disney has been leaving emotional scars on childhood for multiple generations now.

As the show settles in for its New Orleans run, one hopes adjustments to the sound engineering will be made to help make the performers better heard and more clearly understood over the heavily amplified score.

All of these are pointless quibbles, however, in the face of the powerful jaws of ?The Lion King.? It is a show that is a hit, in spite of itself, and audiences will continue to signal their approval with roars in the auditorium and by scooping up souvenirs in the lobby. Its critics will be dead and buried and ?The Lion King? will feed on those who feed on the grass of our graves. Yes, it?s all a part of ?The Circle of Life.?

Automotive AC Machines | absoluteairsd.com

Article by Cooper Miller

As any mechanic knows, the ability to offer a comprehensive service to customers, being able to offer repairs and care for all aspects of a motor vehicle maintenance program is key to being able to retain customers. Air Conditioning is more or less standard across all models these days, and while in the past, AC maintenance was a highly skilled and niche market, it is now an essential side of the business and key to any workshop?s continued success.

In order to ensure that refrigerant is recovered properly from a car?s air conditioning system during servicing, a workshop must use an automotive AC machine. These devices prevent the release through venting of CFC gases. EPA guidelines require that when a car is being serviced, the Freon, or CFC12 that is used as the coolant should be collected and recycled in order that it is not released into the environment where it can potentially damage the ozone layer.

The refrigerant used in most motor vehicle air conditioning systems is based on chlorofluorocarbons, which have been linked with causing damage to the ozone layer, and as such, the control of these substances is of particular concern to the environmental protection agency. Whenever a car air conditioning system undergoes maintenance, proper care must be taken to protect the environment from the release of CFCs, and this is best done by using automotive AC Machines.

By reusing Freon gas rather than allowing it to be vented into the atmosphere, the environment is protected. However, when the refrigerant is collected from a car?s air conditioning it can be contaminated with water, oil and any of the other liquids that are used in cars. By using automotive AC machines, it is possible to process the refrigerant and remove any of the other fluids from it, allowing it to be reused, either in the same system as it has been drained from, or alternatively, in another car altogether.

There are a whole range of different refrigerant recovery machines on the market to suit all types of workshop, from small operations through to large commercial garages that deal with many different types of car, and need to be able to offer a complete service to clients.

Choosing the right automotive AC machines for your needs can be a daunting task, and too many people simply opt for the cheapest model available, rather than making an informed decision about the best product for their needs. EPA requirements aside, the most important factor when choosing the correct automotive AC machine for your business, is the capacity of the machine to deal with the range of vehicles that you currently work on. You need to choose a machine that can connect easily with all the different types of car that your workshop deals with, and which has enough capacity to recover and treat the refrigerant left in the system to remove any impurities.

Basic automotive AC machines such as the Pro Set Oiless Portable Recovery Recycle Unit are flexible enough to reprocess coolant from a fairly wide range of sources, remove any contaminating oils and other liquids, and release the Freon in perfect condition for reuse.

There are other machines in a similar price bracket that are reliable enough for every day use, and yet still compact enough not to require a vast amount of space in your workshop. Automotive AC Machines such as the Inficon Vortex refrigerant recovery machine are ideally suited to occasional use, and are very compact.

If offering AC repairs and servicing is key to your business, then having the right tools for the job is essential. Getting it right at the beginning when you choose an AC coolant recovery machine often means choosing a model from the Cool Tech range. These robust and highly regarded specialist tools are at the centre of any serious AC shop, and thanks to their efficiency and great value for money, will pay for themselves over and over again.

European client pans Goldman slowness to reassure clients

LONDON (Reuters) - Joining a growing chorus of criticism, one of Europe's largest asset managers lashed out at Goldman Sachs Group Inc for not communicating quickly enough with clients after ex-banker Greg Smith publicly condemned the way the bank treats clients.

APG, a Dutch investment adviser that runs 300 billion euros of assets for more than 4.5 million people in the Netherlands, said it was surprised it took the Wall Street bank more than a day to offer APG any reassurance on points raised in Greg Smith's resignation letter.

"We would have expected that a company that faces such a big media backlash over something so core to their business such as client trust would have instantly reached out to those clients to say something," APG spokesman Harmen Geers told Reuters.

Smith's scathing remarks, published in the New York Times on Wednesday, have prompted an outpouring of criticism, ridicule - and defense - of Goldman, the storied Wall Street firm that has become a lightning rod for anti-bank sentiment.

After the piece appeared, Goldman Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and Chief Operating Officer Gary Cohn issued a memo to staff describing the views and observations of the former vice president as "foreign" to most of his 12,000 peers.

Blankfein also sent Goldman Sachs employees a voicemail on Wednesday urging them to reach out to clients and saying they had support from CEOs all over the world, a person familiar with the situation said.

On the voicemail, Blankfein read out two examples of support from clients, the source added.

Geers said the bank contacted APG late on Thursday offering a copy of the staff memo and telephone explanation of its message, a gesture he described as "too little, too late."

Goldman Sachs made no immediate comment when asked how it was communicating with clients.

SUPPORT FOR GOLDMAN

While the criticism has sparked numerous "me too" responses, at least one client using Goldman's investment banking advisory services said it respected the firm's knowledge and experience.

"We've had a love-hate relationship with Goldman for a number of years," United Technologies Corp Chief Financial Officer Greg Hayes told reporters in New York on Thursday.

"For us it's about what these banks bring to the table. I think Goldman has the intellectual capital, they've got the know-how to do these transactions. There's other banks out there, but Goldman is still the preeminent investment bank and they give solid advice."

The diversified U.S. manufacturer has hired Goldman to sell some of the industrial units of its Hamilton Sundstrand arm.

Hayes said Smith's resignation letter would not change his opinion of the firm.

"There's bad apples and there's bad actors at every one of these companies. Banks have a bad reputation anyway," Hayes said. "But I think Goldman can add value."

Yet, Goldman recently drew criticism from a prominent Delaware judge for serving as both an adviser to and beneficiary of El Paso Corp's $23 billion sale to Kinder Morgan.

And among investment managers, faith in Goldman's reputation appeared more tattered.

"One of the more important messages (Smith) gave was the need for the bank to refocus attention on clients and attend more closely to their needs ... but even now, Goldman, as well as some media, seem to be overlooking that," Geers of APG said.

The lack of quick, direct communication with APG underlined how much work Goldman needs to do to prove it puts its customers first, the Dutch group said.

"I have seen the internal memo from Goldman to its employees which says 'we all know this isn't true,' but perception is reality and a service provider lives or dies by whether they have happy clients," Geers said.

"What about trying to re-win trust?" he said. "Goldman's clients are now being forced to explain to their clients why they are doing business with Goldman. We are now obliged to answer questions because of their company culture. From the bank's point of view, that is very bad."

Goldman has bounced back from several dents to its image in recent years, but industry insiders say the unprecedented attack from a former employee could start to push much larger volumes of prospective business to rivals. And it stirred a wide range of reactions.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of rival bank JPMorgan Chase & Co, cautioned employees against trying to "seek advantage from a competitor's alleged issues."

IMPACT ON BANK REFORMS?

At least one wasted no time in saying it put clients first. "In my experience ... client success and firm success can peacefully coexist; in fact thrive," Harris Private Bank Chief Investment Officer Jack Ablin said in an open letter. He oversees $60 billion of investments for individuals and families.

Congressman Barney Frank, an architect of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, said Smith's piece would have "a big impact" on the banking industry's efforts to push back against financial reform.

"It puts the burden on Goldman Sachs and others to show us how what they do benefits the clients and therefore the broader economy," he told Reuters.

One London-based former hedge fund client of the bank, who declined to be named, said some asset managers and family offices were thinking twice about doing business with the bank before Greg Smith's remarks.

"We took them off our system some months back ... I used to know a few guys there, there were a few good ones in that bunch and I have noticed that just about all of them have left in the last year," the manager said.

"They used to tell me that they loved the firm; that it looked after its people and that it had a really good ?code.' And now those people are leaving, so it reflects what (Smith) is saying."

Goldman shares ended 2.2 percent higher on Thursday amid gains for the broader banking sector.
